چکیده

We provide a simple suffi cient condition for the existence of a recursive upper bound on the sequential equilibrium payoff set at a fixed discount factor in two-player repeated games with imperfect private monitoring. The bounding set is the sequential equilibrium payoff set with perfect monitoring and a mediator. We show that this bounding set admits a simple recursive characterization, which nonetheless necessarily involves the use of private strategies. Under our condition, this set describes precisely those payoff vectors that arise in equilibrium for some private monitoring structure. ∗This replaces our earlier paper, “Perfect Versus Imperfect Monitoring in Repeated Games.” For helpful comments, we thank Dilip Abreu, Gabriel Carroll, Henrique de Oliveira, Glenn Ellison, Drew Fudenberg, Michihiro Kandori, Hitoshi Matsushima, Stephen Morris, Ilya Segal, Tadashi Sekiguchi, Andrzej Skrzypacz, Satoru Takahashi, Juuso Toikka, Thomas Wiseman, and participants in several seminars.

Bounding equilibrium payoffs in repeated games with private monitoring

We provide a simple sufficient condition for the existence of a recursive upper bound on (the Pareto frontier of) the sequential equilibrium payoff set at a fixed discount factor in two-player repeated games with imperfect private monitoring. The bounding set is the sequential equilibrium payoff set with perfect monitoring and a mediator. We show that this bounding set admits a simple recursive...

Efficiency in Repeated Games Revisited: The Role of Private Strategies1

The theory of repeated games under imperfect monitoring provides a formal framework to explore the possibility of cooperation in long term relationships, where each agent’s action is not directly observable. It has been successfully applied to a number of economic problems; cartel enforcement, internal labor market, and international policy coordination, to name a few. However, most theoretical...

Communication in Repeated Network Games with Private Monitoring∗

I consider repeated games with private monitoring played on a social network. Each player has a set of neighbors with whom he interacts: a player’s payoff depends on his own and his neighbors’ actions only. Monitoring is private and imperfect: each player observes his stage payoff but not his neighbors’ actions. I introduce costless communication among players at each stage: communication can b...

Strategically Valuable Information

Abstract: In this paper, we extend the Blackwell (1953) comparison of experiments to a strategic setting. We introduce a new partial order more strategically informative — information held by players is “better” — and prove it is equivalent to the partial order more strategically valuable — the ability to induce more equilibrium payoff vectors in all Bayesian games. The conditions we provide ar...
